When the Kyoto-Protocol emtered into force the first time a rule to minimize greenhousegas emissions became generally binding under international law. Although the Kyoto Protocol is not the basis for the European emission trading system, both systems are connected through the burden sharing agreement of the European Union and the Linking Directive which allows the import of emission reductions into the EU emission trading scheme from the flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol, the Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation.

For the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol other guidelines have been devised that - although not directly being international law - do contain important technical guidelines and details for the climate protection regime of the Kyoto protocol.

The following documents are a selection of relevant international rules and guidelines without claim to be complete.
